I love nerds too. You'd be surprised how many people crush on you that you let slip by. He's probably one of them or he wouldn't bother chatting back on facebook.
I would take a chance and take the friendship to the next level by asking him to do something fun or contacting him a more personal way. By saying nerd it sort of implies he's a nice guy, so if he didnt want to hang with you he'd let you down gently! Most likely he'll give you a chance though
