I don't know if I'd say the OSC's "Shadow" series was better than Enders Game, but I thought it (especially Ender's Shadow) was as good as Ender's Game.
Not better than EG, but better than the Speaker for the Dead storyline. I prefered Bean's character to 'Older Ender'.

Okay, another poster , Dekkard, reminded me to make a specific book recommendation:

Its a compilation now, but both books are incredible. Given your interest in hard SF, you'll love these, esp Hellburner. Amazing ship-flying scenes.

oh, that reminded me of another awesome series..
Robin Hobb's Liveship Traders trilogy. Brilliant series.

Oh and the ships in this series are water ships, not sky ships. :p

Yes, read those. Also his Assassins Apprentice series, which are related. Good stuff.

Interesting. I'd read Heavy Time a while back, but not Hellburner.

Even better, HIA. Heavy Time is just the lead-up to how they got their military recruits for the fleet. Good, good stuff.

OMG I can't friggin' BELIEVE I forgot H. Beam Piper. Anything and everything written by him before he took his life, but ESPECIALLY Little Fuzzy, Fuzzy Sapiens and Fuzzies and Other People.

Good follow-ups by other authors are Fuzzy Bones by William Tuning and Golden Dream: A Fuzzy Odyssey by Ardath Mayhar. If you're really geeky (like me) check out the Gashta Homepage.

You are right, he's a she. LOL. One of those 'either' names, like Jamie.

Don't I feel like an idiot... Ended up at the library today (unplanned trip) and couldn't remember a single author or title from Indi. Hadn't written any down either. D'oh!

Oh well, next time.
