my new best friend

I met a girl last semester in an upper level calculus course, i found her to be absolutely gorgeous. Our friendship started as nothing more than "study buddies," but as time went by i started to realize how amazing she truly was, and how similar the two of us are. Then a terrible day came, and i realized she had a boyfriend, a pretty serious one, even though it kinda turned into long distance, because of school. I decided it would be best to leave her alone, or at least try to sweep these feelings, i have for her, under the rug.. However, we unintentionally ended up in another class together this semester. We continued our "study buddy," routine, for a while, but neither of us could help but notice how much alike we are.. It only took a few months for us to consider each other a "new best friend." That's a pretty big deal for each of us, seeing how we've each only called one other a "best friend." This girl opens up to me, and tells me things she says she doesn't feel comfortable with talking about with anyone else. She actually gets me to open up, and I'm normally keep to myself more than anyone, but not with her. One day, we were drinking together at her apartment, and her boyfriend texts her, and tells her i better be at her apartment next Friday, for a party her and her roommates were throwing, so the two of us could meet. So, evidently, she talks about me a lot, she says. That made me super nervous about meeting him, because i didn't want him to think i was trying to come between them, even though i might be unintentionally.. It turned out not to be a big deal. The two of us basically drink all night, talking about her and basketball haha. Funny thing was, in many ways, i know her better than he does, and we've only considered one another "friends" for a few months. This girl probably knows me better than anyone.. Therefore, i would be extremely surprised if she didn't know i was secretly "crazy" about her. If she knows that much, she also knows I'll do everything i can to not hurt her.. If i was to come on to her, i know i would only hurt her.. Therefore, its unlikely either of us will bring this sorta thing up as long as she's with him, but i don't know if they will break up anytime soon, if ever.. Long story short, I've never had a friend like her. I know we'd be great together, but we can't be.. because if i try anything, i honestly don't know what would happen. I definitely left out a lot, but i just want to hear what people have to say about this, if anything at all.

You want to be with her, so I would put an end to the friendship. Tell her about your feelings, and tell her you can't continue like this anymore, and if she is ever ready to date and see where it goes then you to give you a call.

I can't do that. I don't have many friends where i go to school. I can't afford to lose her.

If she's as cool as you say she is, and she likes you, then you're obviously a good guy. Have you tried making more friends? Have you asked her to introduce you to some of her friends?
