I got into a serious car accident a 3 weeks ago where I flipped my car upside and slide into another car upside at a pretty fast speed. I wrecked my car, one other car, and dented a third one just a bit. I received two citations from the police for $130.00 each along with two warnings, the officer seemed pretty nice and I think favored me because I was calm and polite the entire time. She said she could have charged me with about 8 different citations but didn't do it.
We had a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee with minimal insurance (cover other cars but not my car, and $2,500 medical on my end). The total monthly with me and my dad was $140.
Now that we bought a new car (loan) we have to have full coverage. So that brought our insurance up to $257 and $187 once I got my good student discount processed. So $187 isn't that bad not much of a difference; however they hadn't yet accounted for the accident. I called the insurance company today and they are asking for $650 a month... which is insane.
Is there anything I can do or am I just ****ed? That's $400 extra a month that I don't have... is there anyway to reduce? Would switching to a new car insurance? (currently have StateFarm) If I go to court for the two tickets would it go down? How long until it goes back down??
I am turning 20 in 2 months, my dad is 60. If it helps... My dad was in a car accident 5 years ago but he wasn't at fault and I only have 1 other ticket for running a flashing red light (I did stop but I guess the cop didn't think it was good enough).
