Do men typically care what women wear (as long as it's not outlandish or stupid looking)?

I'm going on my first ever date tomorrow with someone I've met online, but lives close by. He's seen in my pictures what I normally wear (pants and a tee shirt), but I don't know if I will be expected to dress up all fancy just for lunch. I was just going to wear pants and a tee shirt but dunno if he'll take it that I was too lazy to dress better or something.

When I met my GF for the first time after chatting online it was clear she had made a big effort to look good - clothes, makeup, jewellery. It showed that she was taking it seriously. Perhaps it's an age thing but for me a woman turning up in pants and a t shirt would not impress me at all.
