If you begged your partner to stay after you stuffed up, and made a list of promises of what you will change for them to stay. But didn't keep any of the promises.

What do you think that would be about? no respect, don't care, doesn't really want to be in the relationship?? anything... just interested to have a males perspective.

After the first *promise* is broken then you need to move on. It's no longer *promises* girlfriend, it's straight up lies.

If I **** up I learn from it, apologize once, and if need be I take action to make it up to her. If I make promises at all I make them very conservatively and very judiciously. I do it this way because first of all I'm not a pussy and second if my gf is smart then begging and making lavish promises to change for her is going to immediately paint the sky crimson with red flags.

If a guy is begging for you to stay and making lavish promises to change for you all he is doing is writing checks that his ass can't cash and just saying anything to keep you around, and that means he sees you as a crutch.

Think about what crutches are for. When you are broken you lean all of your weight onto them and they have to support almost all of your load in order to hold you up. They are in your life to carry your broken ass until you are no longer broken. A guy who begs and makes empty promises out of desperation to keep you around is emotionally broken - you are in his life to carry his emotional weight and he freaks out when you start refusing to carry it just the same way someone with a broken leg would freak out if some guy ran up to him and kicked his crutches out from underneath him - he would panic and scramble desperately to get his crutches back underneath him - and in our scenario the broken guy is the guy who is making the empty promises and begging for you to stay, the empty promises and begging = the desperate scrambling to get his crutches back underneath him, and you are the crutches. Make sense now?

Perhaps you've heard of someone who is in a relationship and others accuse him/her of "using his significant other as a crutch for happiness". This is kinda what that expression means in a literal sense.
