Its your job to make nice to her. If you want to think of it in feudal terms, you are the petitioner and she the local lady. Her son is the commodity you want, and she's part of the package. Come bearing gifts, be social and, above all, polite. You should be making the attempt to get to know her, and so doing, she will get to know you.
If you can't, or won't, you will lose out in the end. There's a reason for the painful mother-in-law stereotype. Remember: when you get divorced, she will still be his mom.
Second thoughts can generally be amended with judicious action; injudicious actions can seldom be recovered with second thoughts.
