Yeh, but you need to search for it, cross check links to make sure they are the right stuff, search for what the quality's like (unless you don't mind watching one filmed in the cinema with crap quality). All these things take too much time. For me time is more important than 10 bucks.

If I'm a true fan of the artist, I buy the CD. If not, I'll download. I buy all my movies though. Have over 120 DVDs.

Its interesting that ebooks haven't caught on in the same way. I've bought a couple, but I still prefer the feel of a real book in my hands.

As for movies, I just rent from itunes. For $5, you can download to your comp & start watching after about 30 mins. The rest of the movie downloads while you are watching & is done before you get to the end. You can even record it while watching if you want to keep the movie.

Its really quite easy to get the hang of it, if I know what movie Im looking for it's less than 5 mins, quality is an issue if you want a movie that is cinema-new (and wouldn't be available on DvD anyhow).

And a good site sure helps.

*cough* www.thepiratebay.com *cough* Go swedish loopholes, go.

And yeah, e-books will take a long time to work, bloody annoying to read on a screen as though its a billing report, just got an "architect dictionary" one so that I can use the search function rather than run through the pages in a book. Audio books aren't bad, just difficult to find where you left off sometimes, and only used 'em when I worked as a newspaper distributor/driver for those long shifts.

Money is time. Depending on how much you make an hour you can actually figure out how much time you're expending to acquire the movie by purchasing it in the store. If you know what you're doing and where to look, finding a high quality movie online is a snap. Five minutes is all it takes to load up mininova, type the title in the search bar, scan for a respectable group and then download. Less than five minutes, actually. Takes a little research to get to that point, though.

Personally, I'm against piracy, but this is because I am a writer and a designer and I know you can work for 5 years to write something someone else will download for free in a couple of hours. I must admit, however, that I have made use of piracy 3 times in my life:

1. My first copy of Dreamweaver, when I was 23 years old.
2. A 4-cd computer game that was simply not sold anywhere in Peru.
3. A porn video

All in all, I think everyone deserves to make some money for his or her work, so I don't pirate.

I am making a large use of open source software now.
