Thats great Alexi. Really! I love books too. Have TONS! Like you though, I haven't read them all. Just the ones I found interesting. I've read several twice also. I wish my mum would stop giving me romance novels though. lol They are just collecting dust! How many times can you read the same freaking story over and over with different characters and settings? Thanks for the info on the Dragonlance Chronicles. I'm going to look it up in the book store tomorrow.

well achilles fought to be remembered, but he also had the compassionate side to him. he knew what was right and wrong, and that is where he didn't agree with Agamemnon. raverboy

That may have been exagerrated in/for the movie. When I get around to reading the Iliad, I'll ressurect this old thread and either confirm that or set the record straight.

Okay Alexi, just don't ruin my illusions of Achilles being this romantic warrior who fights evil, wins the girl and takes her off to live in his bat cave....

I didn't get the chance to look for that book yet......went to the theatre instead. Saw The day after Tomorrow. Not much to say about it. Predictable. Hopelessly predictable.

well he probably was a little bit more on the rugged side as far as looks. brad didn't really have too many scars, yet tom cruise had a lot in the last samurai. raverboy

He was achilles. People couldn't even TOUCH him. You need to be touched (cut) in order to have a scar.

Firstly, don't worry about spoiling the plot, this story was written nearly 3000 years ago.

He was a warrior and did go to Troy so people would remember his name, but I saw his character as much more than that. Surely the way he treated Briseis proved that. He wasn't just a killing machine and he had honour and a clear sense of what was right. Example, the scene with Priam after Hector was killed. What he allowed Priam to do and then the pact he made for 12 days; something even Agamemnon wouldn't do and was fiercely angered by. I think whether Achilles fought so people remembered his name or not, he still wanted to do the right thing, hence his likeness to Algren.
The plot of the movie has heavily diverged from the original Illiad. For one, Agamemnon feuded with Achilles not over "honor" and "what was right," but over the right to own slaves, Briseis, who Achilles never loved. For another, Agamemnon has a save trip home after which he is murdered by his wife because she suspects he is sleeping with Cassandra, Briseis does not kill him, Briseis gets killed. Going on, Achilles gets killed before the Trojan Horse is built, he doesn't get inside that thing. Achilles and Patrocles were not cousins, in fact, there's allusions that, beyond sharing armor, they may have shared a bed. Menelaus does not get killed, at all. And my pet peeve, Aeneas (you know, that kid way at the end of the film who Paris hands "The Sword of Troy" at the gates of the catacomb) was in his mid 20's, not some 15 year old pulled fresh off the home-improvement set. + he had a kid and was a Prince of Troy, Paris knew him, he wasn't "just another guy." This movie thoroughly raped the plot.

As for the fighting sequences, I thought the fights between Achilles and Hector were way better than the fight sequences in Gladiator. While Gladiator was more Hollywood-esque, Russel Crowe doesn't know shit about how to handle a sword. Having done martial arts for many years, I was extremely impressed by Brad Pitt's form, his mastery of the sword, his techniques and the moves he made, and the fact that the fight scenes weren't made to be intense. Instead, Pitt operated with a sense of calmness and precision, which is how I imagine a seasoned warrior like Achilles would fight, as opposed to a general running around ranging, goring people and screaming "Are you not entertained!?"

Illusional, what... exactly... did Achilles do to Hector's body? Describe it thoroughly, don't leave out any details.

And yes, what happens in the Illiad, not that Hollywood crap.

I was speaking of the hollywood crap as you call it, having never had the pleasure of reading the Iliad yet myself. But thanks for the clarification. I guess thats why they use the term, loosely based when they make movies from books or epic poems. Still enjoyed the movie regardless, and I think most people that go to the movies, WANT to be entertained as opposed to getting the facts. Let's face it, by the sounds of it, the Iliad in it's TRUE form would not appeal to the masses.

I would definitely recommend Gladiator if u like Troy cuz Gladiator is a better version of Troy. However, Russell Crowe(not saying he is ugly) is definitely not a Brad Pitt...but who is.

I disagree majorleague. I thought Troy's combat sequences were well-done, while Gladiator felt exceedingly fake, Hollywood-esque, and over-the-top. Also, I felt that Brad Pitt and the other cast members were better swordfighters than Russ.

    MVP,

Got confused in your earlier post. Were you impressed because of Brad Pitt's past martial arts studies or because of what YOU know through martial arts training that he did a good job passing it off?

Also, to others, BTW< Achilleus is PISSED at Agemmemnon because Agemmemnon disregarded his advice, then got the Apollo's fury raining on him, and then, after trying time and time again, FINALLY listens to Achilleus, but to teach Achilleus "his place" orders that Achilleus be stripped of his mistress to be placed in Agemmemnon's bed. Achilleus pretty much says, "Fine. Wanna be that way? Be that way. But if you touch anything else of mine, I'll ****in' kill you."
