Recreational flying is probably tons of fun, but I'll always regard it as something for people who got some money to burn, I bet that the costs of learning as well as hiring a plane and paying for fuel is moderate to high, and about to only get higher. But if it's what you want to do, by all means, it'll be great, just be responsible and calm.

If its as a career, well, it's nowhere as glamorous to fly a 747 for a 10-hour run as 2 hours in a low-altitude prop aircraft.

But still, helicopters will rule supreme.

The title of this thread put this song in my head for the day.

EDIT: Wow - Tom Petty looks young in this video.

Relax... I'll need some information first. Just the basic facts - can you show me where it hurts?

yeah! a guy i work with i just found out, has his pilots license! he said renting a plane and all that is very expensive. there was one place where it was easier but they closed down.

he said gliding is the way to go right now. we supposedly have some world class gliding place nearby.

i want to try that too, but i really want to fly a plane with engines.

I think you should really, really make this happen, Miso. Too many ppl say they want to do something and then never go for it.

Life is short. Think of your relatives. Make this happen. Sign up to go for a flight with a power pilot this month and a glider pilot as soon as the weather is warm enough.

yeah i'm gonna try the glider thing. it is so much less expensive and seems more, artistic and organic.

spring time is the time to do it apparently. right in time for my birthday. maybe i'll do it for myself as a birthday present.

    Awesome, good for you!

You should start reading up about it now. Learn how to detect thermals and such. It will impress the instructor.

Hovering aircraft are probably the american equivalent of the british Harrier jumpjet, imagine it would be quite a sight.

But yeah, with fuel inconsistencies and costs I'd say that gliders are the way to go. Maybe if there's an organization that has outings, since I imagine that hiring an aircraft to tow you up there for a single person is expensive as well.

Should be some interesting courses on it too, learning about wind patterns and such.

So do you want to fly yourself or just hang in for the ride?
