well at first, i'd let her sleep with the two of you for a couple of months. however, after that, i'd put her in the other bed thingy... the kid has to grow up sometime.

...this is just my perspective on the situation...

If you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best. ~ Marilyn Monroe
We used a low basinette, kept at our bedside. This way, we could look at him, feed him, and still sleep without concern of squashing him. Its also lets one person sleep through a feed, highly recommended, if your wife is pumping her breast milk.
Above all else, protect your own sleep. You will both need it. Take turns with feeds, and later, entire feeding nights. Have the "off" parent sleep elsewhere or use earplugs. You will thank me for this a couple months in.
Second thoughts can generally be amended with judicious action; injudicious actions can seldom be recovered with second thoughts.

F*ck, I've elbowed my girlfriend in the face/head several times.
I've stolen the blankets from her, I've managed to land the majority of my pillows onto the floor (I sleep with 3).
I sleep much better on my own, I know she does. I couldn't even imagine having to worry about a child being there.
Even if I didn't smother it, I'd get shitty sleep because I toss and turn like mad, and if I can't, I don't sleep well.
