I don't want to trash martial arts, but much of it is rooted in tradition rather than practicality, hence the rise of mixed martial arts.

You take a karate expert and you throw him in a ring with a trained fighter and that karate expert is going to have his ass handed to him. No questions asked.

I took Shotokan for several years myself. As a sport or an activity it was great. However, a useful means of self-defense it is not.

That's true. Actually, I don't take aikido for self-defense, either, tho I think the guy I train with is probably better than most for that potential transition.

I've noticed the people who are training for that kind of thing tend to be taking *several* MA. We have RCMP, ex-military in our dojo & they are all already shodan+ in other disciplines (e.g. karate, judo, etc.).

I guess the more training, the more choices.

a person with martial arts training will have more confidence and self-esteem than a person without.

martial arts training teaches respect, self-discipline and better concentration.

    better physical and mental conditioning.

does make a person stronger and gives better endurance.

teaches weapon training, or basically that almost any item can be utilized as a weapon.

I would rather have my Shotokan training and hope to never get locked in an elevator with a trained fighter.

With my current study/work schedule and finances it's simply impossible, so my earliest hope to do that would be next summer (N hemisphere winter).

The best self defense is not placing yourself in a dangerous situation from the get go and escaping if you do find yourself in such a position. Fighting should always be the absolute last resort. If you're locked in an elevator and compliance isn't an option then fight with everything you've got.

Thing is, all too often people get a little martial arts training and they think that makes up for a lack of street toughness or they think their little sparring matches provide as much experience as a real fight in the ring or in some alley. Instead of escaping or handing over the wallet folks decide to take matters into their own hands and often wind up getting hurt for it.

You're better off being scared out of your goddamn mind and clawing the guy's eyes out like an animal or running in absolute terror to escape him. Those reactions aren't coincidence. If you don't have extensive combat training you're much better relying on nature's proven methods than turning to what should be understood as a philosophical meeting point between mind and body, not a form of combat.

I agree with all of this, FWIW.

You too, Dig. You've been married. I know you hate me, so here's the perfect opportunity to let me know what I'm doing wrong. Please read my thread, I need help. Or, if not for me, help me to help my son.

martial arts for self-defense? Are you kidding me? People use guns nowadays.

But martial arts can be beneficial for health and endurance.

Killing = sin. Unless you are doing it for the right reason.

Anyone seen this recent hongkong made "IP man" movie ? The movie showcase the founder of wingchun martial art.
Bruce lee is one of his students. Pretty interesting.

    Here's a trailer:

For non traditional arts go for Brazillian Jujitsu, Muay Thai and Escrima and you'll do fine.

Hand to hand is just if you dont have any other means to defend yourself in a situation. Like if you lose your gun or run out of bullets.

Gribble is right. Just try to avoid putting yourself in a dangerous place in the first place. Theres a book called "Tough Target" written by a police officer which has alot of useful street smart tips (of course use your common sense too).

Martial arts does not make you street smart or protect yourself against savy street tactics used by criminals or thugs. Books by Marc Animal Mac Young are useful here.

"Verbal Judo" is another good book to talk your self out of a dangerous situation or an agressive attacker. Its been praised by a number of police officers on dealing with with suspects.

nb: do you know some real master with real mastery of martial arts ?If you know someone tell me his name(oh yea and bruce lee is not a master in martial arts he is just an average martial artist so refrain from mentionning his name)thank you
