I think it is important to note that there are many women who wouldn't mind a thicker male. The problem isn't necessarily the weight, but rather the *change* in weight. This particular girl hooked up with a buff guy, and now she doesn't see him anymore.

@valkyrie4896: You're right. It simply comes down to the fact that she is turned off by my love handles. That doesn't make her shallow - it makes her human. And just because I wouldn't react in the same way does not make her wrong.
Take her for granted? No way! My girlfriend means the world to me and I like to think I work very hard to try to make her and the relationship happy. If anything, I probably don't take the time to see things from her point of view often enough. For example, I used to think this situation was her problem - I now realise that it's my doing, and my problem. Thanks for your input - much appreciated.

@Graham Berkeley: If my girfriend wasn't a good person and didn't love me, I'd actually be worried about her potentially cheating on me. Also, it's not the drinking - I don't drink that often. A year ago I got an office job and started studying part time. Basically I sit on my ass all day - that's what has caused the weight gain. I had no idea it would pile on so quickly and easily! It's been a real eye opener for me!

@vashti & Charlie Boy II: Well, actually I wouldn't mind if my girlfriend put on a lot of weight. I'm not just saying that because I have been in that situation before, and it didn't change a thing for me. My folly is in thinking that because I don't mind, other people must not mind as well! Everybody's different I guess!

@BoredGeorge: Haha, yeah I was leaving my t-shirt on during sex, but I could tell that she was still turned off. Yeah women can be awful, but so can guys. And yeah it did hurt when she told me, but she didn't tell me openly - she cracked after I hounded her for a month for an explanation!

@Gigabitch: You know, when I get back to my buff self, I'm actually thinking of doing that as a bit of a joke. I'll tell her that if she doesn't want me at my worst, she doesn't deserve me at my best. I'll give her a bit of a scare, haha. You're right, she won't like that at all - she'll probably want me fat again.
I actually got hit on the other day, which made me feel really good - shame it was by another guy!

I just want to personally thank everyone for their comments. I now have a more unbiased, realistic view of the situation, and I know what needs to be done. I can take it from here.

Lose the weight for yourself, not to make her happy. Otherwise, you won't be able to keep it off. I'm not so sure its a bad thing she's being honest with you. It is unhealthy to put on that much weight, so she's probably just as concerned for your health as your appearance.
