did you bother to read the article or just the headline? The son had no hope of being saved while the wife did. It's not like both had an equal chance of survival. Thanks to the father's actions, 2 people are alive instead of 3 people dead.

I didn't read the article at all. It wasn't really necessary to do so in order to answer Gribble's question.

try again. This is why if you're given an article, it's good to read it before commenting.
"His wife Vanessa had escaped from the car but was crying for help as she struggled to keep her head above water, while their son Silva, 13, was still trapped inside the sinking vehicle.
I tried to get down and get him [Silva] but I couldn't - it was just too deep,' said Mr Horton yesterday. 'And Vanessa was going under."
After Mr Horton had made his heartbreaking decision to drag his wife to safety, police and firefighters, summoned by passers-by, dived into the murky water to try to free Silva. However, by then, even reaching the vehicle proved impossible in the darkness."
cliffnotes (since you can't be bothered with reading the article):
- car falls into murky water at night
- father tries to rescue son first but fails
- decides to save wife who escaped from car
- even firefighters couldn't rescue son
- thanks to father, now 2 people are alive instead of 3 dead
We can't judge this man for his decision in such a screwed up situation. He did attempt to save his son first, so he did have the same thoughts as many of us on here.
What a tough ass decision to live with. I would most definitely end up going crazy.
That is so sad. Just the thought of my daughter dying and me not being able to help is unbearable.
I also had this talk with my boyfriend. I told him he better choose our kids over me in a life or death situation and vice versa. I wouldn't be able to go on with my life like I did if I lived over them.

If some of you read the ****ing story, you'd realize all this happened over a letterbox. Isn't that sad? A horrible accident caused by overreaction. Some kids entertaining themselves by vandalizing a family's property, the parents overreact and decide to chase them off in high speed pursuit and end up driving straight into some water.
I judge them for that, but I can't judge the man for his reaction. We would never understand what 'too deep' is without swimming to the bottom of a murky pit like he did. I can only assume he did the best he could. At least one life was saved. Of course losing a son is a tragic loss, but think logically about this; at least there will be two parents to raise the remaining two daughters. A widow trying to raise two children is a tragedy in and of itself.

The truly funny part is how you criticize people for not reading, but you apparently tried to read it and can't.
She didn't drive into the water. She parked the car and it rolled into the water.
Anyway, since when is vandalism a legitimate form of entertainment? Somebody vandalises your property, do you just shrug it off or try to find out who did it and make them pay? They weren't trying to kill the kids or send them to jail, they just wanted them to own up and take responsibility.
STFU Neo. You have no ****ing clue in this what it means to be a mother. Our comments are completely based in emotion, not logic you stupid Tractor. Just cause *your* mother would have left you to drown doesn't mean all would.

So what we're doing here is basically measuring the value of each of our loved ones lives? Hypothetical or otherwise?
What a depressing thread.

I don't understand the problem. I love my husband, he loves me. But our son has his whole life ahead of him to live. There is no way I would ever deny him that if it was in my power to decide.
Yes, this story was sad and the father had to roll the hard six and lost. But my comments (and Vash's) were more general than this story.
