Yep. In Europe the shoe size is indeed different. Size 8 in the US would be about 41 in Europe so he isn't far.

There are some disadvantages with it (mostly, as you said, being different then the rest) but it also has some advantages. For example:

1 foot = 12 inches. Right? 12 can be divided by: 1,2,3,4 and 6
If you take the metric system which involves multiplying by 10, well then 10 is divisable by: 1,2 and 5 -- thirds, quarters... aren't nearly as easy. It's just a matter of getting used to it.

Agreed. I am more used to it (since I live in Europe) but it's always good to see both sides of the coin.
