My father thought beating children (and anyone else he felt like beating) was his prerogative. He didn't exactly lead by example. I hate his stinking guts and I have never beaten my daughter. I would maul anyone who tried.

The only times I've ever encountered children who might have "needed" a beating, I found that it was their parents who really needed a beating. I've spent some time around other people's kids. I volunteered for years in my daughter's classroom, was a Girl Scout leader and a soccer coach. I've come across some real little shits, and across the board, I've felt that it was their parents' fault. These kids acted up because their parents were assholes, not because they weren't being beaten enough.

At 7 years old your children haven't learned how to manipulate a seat belt button?...I always wore a seat belt to...I suppose I was just a very intelligent 7 year old. I thought all of them knew how to push a button.

I still believe there is a difference between beating and spanking your children. Would I use a belt? No I wouldn't, I do believe it is excessive. I'd only ever use my hand and that all that was ever used on me. I'm not really defending Incognito here as much as I'm trying to make people understand there is a difference between beating a child and spanking a child. And truly Incognito could have still not been that rough with it...we don't really know. He seems like a nice guy and I truly hope he stopped before leaving marks....although I still don't believe it was your place to say that your children will achieve more than his simply for this fact...its an uncalled for insult. We can have a debate without offending each other...thats the only reason I said you should apologize to him.

Truly I am glad you were not abused as a child. It seems several people in this thread were. As I said I was spanked and I do not have any bad feelings or memories or problems with relationships.

I will admit my parents were not perfect. My dad hasn't hugged me since I was a very little boy or told me he loves me which while I know he does it would be nice to hear it. Now I have to feel very close to somebody before I am able to have physical contact with them. Otherwise I feel uncomfortable. My mom is quite affectionate though...but I'm not saying my parents were perfect. I'm just saying I wasn't abused or beaten. I was spanked and only for the most severe cases....such as when I was able to operate a highly technical seat belt, turn the keep and pop it in drive...as I said though perhaps I was just a highly intelligent child.

I mean if I could play video games surely I can use a seat belt.

I still don't know right from left. Spent 30 minutes yesterday looking for my sister on the right when she told me that she was on the left. Amazingly enough I was able to convince our mom that right side was actually left.

Its not about intelligence at that age. Its about self-control and, clearly, you didn't have it at that age. At age 7, no matter how smart you think you were, you needed to be watched. If you had been, that incident wouldn't have happened. Or it was a horrible accident. Either way, the responsibility was clearly in your parents purview.

But, sure. You and Incognito have convinced me with your oh-so-cogent arguments that I should really revisit the idea of spanking or belting my son. I mean, he's such a reasonable lad right now, just imagine how much more he could be with a bit of corporeal punishment.

Truly Marx has been greatly misinterpreted. And everybody hears socialism and thinks of Soviet Russia or China but truly we already have socialist aspects in our government...I just want to extend a few of them.
