From the tone of your question, I doubt very much you could understand, but seeing as this thread has turned to the meaning of selfishness I'll briefly explain. To be selfish is to operate as - and therefore for and through - the mind-body-vibe vehicle (I call emotion "vibe" because it's a more inclusive term). To be selfless, an extremely rare state, is to experience the life (force) that is in everything, that unconditionally shines. Here there is genius, madness and love; but also a curious sense of simple normality.

    Minus reputation for that asshole!
The man in conflict with himself sees conflict where there is harmony. Peace be with you.

Language itself is metaphor. There is no other way to communicate.

Everything is alive. Everything. It is all life. What we call "evolution" is the visible active tip of a process which, viewed in time, goes from eternity to eternity. This cannot be understood rationally, by the limiting abstract mind, or physically, by time-and-space bound matter, or emotionally-vibically, by contingent apperception; it can only be experienced by participation in it. This experience is timeless and spaceless, yet completely real. It has been attested by many of the world's finest artists and mystics (although soon abstracted and formalised by priests and other hanger's on). This state can be known through devotion, extreme self-purification (which doesn't necessarily mean fasting and prayer, etc) or, amazingly, love-making. I quite understand if this is all nonsense to you, if it sounds like madness, but you'll find the Gospel according to Thomas (the most authentic gospel extant - omitted from the bible), the Tao Te Ching, many of the Buddha's more reliable teachings, not to mention the words of more modern artists and teachers, very similar in paradoxical tone, and equally, to your mental-emotional self, baffling.

Sorry for lack of the brevity you prize, but these things can sometimes be difficult to get across.

Is it just me, or do all DJ's posts sound like some twisted form of late 18th century poetry?

Okay, you puppies have probably never seen this, but does anyone remember Damon Wayans on In Living Color playing this convict that spewed nonsensical, multisyllabic, hilarious words? It was one of those fake public service ads, "A mind is a terrible thing to waste."

Sometimes, just for a minute, I hear Damon Wayans' voice speaking DJ's words.......

    I think DJ is fake.

    Therefore, he is fake.

I don't care what you say philoso-man, my milkshakes are much more pleasing to digest than any of that inane babble you're spouting.

Congratulations, you own a thesaurus. Personally, I prefer to not type like a pretentious hippie asshole, but to each his own.

But to address this drivel you keep spewing, go live in The City of God for a week. All this pseudo philosophical nonsense you keep going on about is a result of your never having had to actually worry about survival. You've lived a cushy life so you are free to dictate what is right and wrong and how the world works without having to worry about practical things. But anybody that has any life experience knows that things aren't as clear as you pretend to make them. Feeling at one with the universe is myth along the same lines as the bible. Whatever's been done to cause you to be so deluded should be undone for your own good, hence my suggestion to go live amongst people who aren't able to fritter away their time philosophizing and I'm assuming your case, lighting up.

I only ask you concern yourself with brevity if you find your explanations are in excess.
Allow me to quibble for a second.

Can you distinguish for me, concisely (and with as much brevity as you can stand), the difference between...
    (My emphasis).

If a particular point needs a framework to stand on, by all means, build the framework.
I can build a framework, but the question is what the framework is standing on.

In any case, your posts are baffling and I suppose I'll never ascend to this higher plane of consciousness.
You won't if you sarcastically dismiss it as "a higher plane of conciousness". If you really did believe that you were fundamentally lost in an ersatz reality, you would ardently desire to escape, and would thus succeed.

I suppose that's alright; I think I belong down here in basal, fleshy-reality where I pursue sex for purely selfish reasons.
Then you shall stay there, obviously.
It isn't your idea of the ultimate state of being, but at least it's a fulfillment I can understand.
It's not an idea, but fair enough. One day, I hope, you will intuit a fulfillment that you can't understand, that is, as you say, "baffling" - but that is so sweet you can do nothing but throw yourself in. Because, finally, nothing can be "understood". We tell ourselves that we know things, just because we can name them. This chair, when directly percieved, is a mysterious miracle - and if that is true of a chair, how much more the sky, my lover, or the present moment itself?

Tell God I'm sorry for doubting Him, I'm just looking for something I can believe.
It's not difficult to find something you believe. Belief is easy.

Anyrate, thanks for talking Aegis; your posts at least have been, for the most part, courteous.

    Moving on...

Congratulations, you own a thesaurus. Personally, I prefer to not type like a pretentious hippie asshole, but to each his own.
"A man is called pretentious nowadays, if he dresses as he likes to dress. But in doing that he is acting in a perfectly natural manner. Pretention, in such matters, consists in dressing according to the views of one’s neighbour, whose views, as they are the view of the majority, will probably be extremely stupid."

Things haven't changed since Oscar's time.

As for being called a hippy, like being called a socialist or a mystic, the label has been tainted by fools and advertisers, and can refer either to a pretentious or decadent lover of form, or someone who pursues truth outside of societal givens. People who like to throw insults around usually don't stop to consider the difference.

    And I don't own a thesaurus.

But to address this drivel you keep spewing...
Strange meaning you give to the word "address" here...

...go live in The City of God for a week.
That will be the place made popular by the film of the same title, yes?

All this pseudo philosophical nonsense you keep going on about is a result of your never having had to actually worry about survival. You've lived a cushy life...
How do you know all this about me? Or is it assumption?

Leaving aside its "educational" value, is it necessary to live in "The City of God" to worry about survival?

...so you are free to dictate what is right and wrong and how the world works without having to worry about practical things.
Leaving aside, again, your assumptions, as far as I know, we are all free in this way.

But anybody that has any life experience knows that things aren't as clear as you pretend to make them.
Yes, that's why I say that clarity is the result of giving up your experience.

Feeling at one with the universe is myth along the same lines as the bible.
Finally we come to your "addressing" my points. What this amounts to is "you're wrong", which, despite being a trifle summary, is fair enough. I would like to know why you think so though; what you have done to discover this extraordinary truth (which, after all, has ramifications for all of humanity), what experiments you have made with living, what discoveries you have made enquiring into the meaning of love, the origin of beauty, the source of creativity and other such fundamental questions. I would like to know, but I suspect I'm not going to find out anything particularly original or interesting. I suspect I am just going to get lots of posturing insults and more assumptions.

Whatever's been done to cause you to be so deluded should be undone for your own good
    Why?

hence my suggestion to go live amongst people who aren't able to fritter away their time philosophizing and I'm assuming your case, lighting up.
So, let's sum up. I should go and live in an extremely dangerous, unhealthy, and possibly unloving place, where there is no time to enjoy life or to learn about it, in order to divest myself of the myth that I am cheerfully connected with an intelligent universe.

Thank you for this advice, but I won't be taking it again.

For those very comfortably ingrained in practicality, you're upsetting.
Ha ha ha! Very good, and a strange compliment, if not intended so.

Cults ask for devotion to a person or an idea that cannot be completely known. I suggest devotion to reality itself, or the present moment (where reality most is). This "will to awareness" dissolves all problems.

For example - and practical advice this! - when nervous will yourself to be aware of the sensation of fear in your own body, this seperates the real present-moment you - i.e. the aware you - from the false past-future-based you - i.e. the worry. This makes the worry (or whatever) disappear. This extreme present-moment awareness also works in sex (although here it is not worry, but the flip-side of the worry-lie - desire - that you are observing and seperating from), with astonishing results.

As for the popular reaction, those purporting to have a deep understanding of (for lack of better words) reality and the universe seldom enhance other's lives with their understanding.
This is not generally true; it depends on who is doing the purporting and who the "others" are.

Mostly, people feel their time has been wasted, and as likely as not, by someone that has gained a deep understanding through liberal use of narcotics. Hence the hippie label.
Yes, of course. There are lots of pseuds out there. You have to be careful - although being careful doesn't mean being dismissive, so I thank you for your attention.

TDurden and Aegis, nice posts! I tried to bump your rep points, Aegis, but the system won't let me.

Damoclesjones - effective communication requires that the people you are addressing actually comprehend what you are trying to say. If you have access to some "truth" you would like to share, you might want to learn to communicate better.
Relax... I'll need some information first. Just the basic facts - can you show me where it hurts?

I can't bump yours, either. I have to share the love first.

Effective communication also requires that the people you are addressing make some effort to comphrehend - especially when the ideas are unfamiliar. So far only Aegis has demonstrated even the tiniest interest in doing this.

Nevertheless I certainly make mistakes - and can always improve my ability to explain myself. What exactly that I have said do you not comprehend - and would like to?

I so can't be bothered to sift through all that shit and find examples of your inscrutability. I guess I fail to communicate. Strangely, I don't feel I'm missing anything. If you would care to explain to me how my sex life isn't good enough, I may come back later and check for new posts.

    But probably not.
