I won a scholarship for NROTC, but later received a letter saying that I was disqualified because I take prozac. I was (and still am) pissed at that
haha you wouldn't care about anything because you're a loner...as long as you are getting laid, i think you'll be happy.
well i would think that most prostitutes are good at what they do, but i could be wrong.. haha j/k. i couldn't resist.
on the real, i wouldn't care if my wife made more than me, but i'd better not be making chump change. if i'm working my ass off at jack in the box while she's making millions, then i'd be shame. on the other than, if i'm working 50K and she's making 60K then it's not so big of a deal.
in the end, i'd probably get a lot of shit talking done to be because that's the women that i attract.

...this is just my perspective on the situation...
Except at college, everything is curved, too. So, not to worry. Instructors need you to like them so that they can keep their jobs. We'll tell you that your smart even if you are an idiot. The system is rigged for the benefit of the student. Its a business...you pay and after the appearance of learning, degrees are granted Only places where that doesn't happen as often is fields like math, physics or chemistry.
I've been swamped. Real life took a hold of me in good and very sad ways. Dealt with some saddness recently.
Re: the fact that instructors will tell college students that they are smart even when are idiots...it is sort of a form of intellectual prostitution, or possibly even the equivalent of what a woman tells a guy after sex...about how wonderful it was.
Uh...reality....99.999% of the time....even the best college student paper is a piece of crap that wouldn't get published. There are some very rare students who are sooo ****ing bright that they even makes the professor feel dumb. But, "Wittgenstein's" are rarities....and Indi will get the meaning of my comment. Personally, I love meeting students who are more gifted than the instructor...that's the basis of intellectual progress in the world. It is sad when they don't realize their full potential and it is amazing when they do.
Intellectual prostitution, indeed! As an adult student, I have met my share of idiot professors, too. My observation is that some professors enjoy having their enormous egos stroked by students that idolize them and think they are brilliant. It sounds like a mutually beneficial arrangement to me.
Relax... I'll need some information first. Just the basic facts - can you show me where it hurts?
Yeah no shit everything is curved. In fact it is curved to an 80 in most of my classes, which is a B-. And no, they actually continually remind us just how ****ing stupid we are. Grad inflation is not a problem here. Kids who had easy 5s on their APs are now stuck with Cs in classes because the curve is such a bitch
Trust me, there is no pretending to have learned material. I'm a biochemistry major and all the classes keep it real. Calc, multivariable calc, linear algebra (not the easy shit linear algebra), quantum mechanics, etc are all mandatory, aka the basics. Classes where you can't bullshit your way out of stuff. Chemistry classes, physics classes, biology classes. So the stuff is by NO MEANS just an appearance to be learning. You said it happens less often in math, chem and physics... Actually, it doesn't happen at ALL in those subjects here
And there was some talk about professors being dumb... All of my professors are freaking smart as hell. My chemistry lecture on Tuesday (and I think until the end of the semester?) is being given by Gerhard Ertl, who was the only recipient of the Nobel Prize in chemistry less than 2 weeks ago. I have a lot of respect for my professors, the research they do and you read about in your textbooks isn't pulled out of their ass
Are you saying people aren't depressed in other countries? Do me a favor, take 200mg of ecstasy for 10 days in a row. And then understand the chemical basis for depression.
Maybe if your head wasn't so far up your ass you would have seen that suicide rates are much higher in many, many other countries. Of course this wouldn't reflect depression, would it?
If a majority of students are doing poorly in a class that is not a negative reflection of the students. That is a negative reflection of the instructor.

If people are good only because they fear punishment and hope for reward, then we are a sorry lot indeed.
-Albert Einstein
I posted pics from the LF party.
And I'd like to throw in my two cents that suicidal depression is neither new nor restricted to first world countries. I was thinking about this just this morning after hearing a story on NPR about studies that are showing that 3 out of 5 suicide bombers have some kind of physical disability or deformation and that many of them have been reported to be depressive by the people who knew them.

K, now I found this interesting. Of *course* we know that anyone who straps a bomb to their body is ****ing nuts. I mean, can you imagine anyone they interviewed saying anything *other* than that?
"Why, yes, I think Osambu was quite the standup guy. His family and students loved him. Too bad he's blown to bits now..."
What I'd like to know is whether those 'studies' were done with the intent of making us feel even *less sorry* for those crazy, deformed, middle eastern ****s who want nothing more than to blow us to kingdom come.
I mean, this way, they deserve to get what's coming to them, right? I just bet GWB loved that report.
