two things it could be.
1. some times people blank out. the brain works on a larger problem and everthing goes to solving that problem. so people do not think you are asleep you keep the eyes open. the eyes have to point in some direction. whenever this has happened to me i usually have no idea what i am looking at because i am not using the eyes, sense of time goes out of the window also. i once sat perfectly still unblinking for 6 hours. maybe something similar is happening here.
2. and this is more likely. he finds you attractive. and is trying to work up the courage to talk to you.
