There's nothing to think about with respect to In the Mouth of Madness. The "plot" is just a flimsy pretext to string together some interesting visuals and special effects.

it's a great movie with even greater cast: Laurence Fishburne and Sam Neill!

I thought that it was almost great. The special effects and cheesy villain lines near the end sort of spoiled an otherwise interesting movie.

I disagree, the plot is well thought through up until the very end, there's a lot more to take in and understand than in your average horror film with running social commentary and metaphors for modern life. Did it not make sense to you?

While watching In the Mouth of Madness, I kept thinking, "why did that character do that?" Why did Linda hit the boy on the bike with her car? Why didn't John offer to drive after that? Why did Linda steal John's car keys later on? Why did John attack people with an axe? Why were the people in the asylum slaughtered?

When all these whys were left unanswered, I stopped trusting the story and started analyzing it. And it falls apart. It's just stupid. Nothing means anything. Stuff happens, John reacts, repeat, repeat ad nauseum. It only seems deep if you fail to understand it but assume that it was just too deep for you to understand. But it all makes sense if you just assume that Carpenter wanted to do some cool scenes and didn't bother linking them with a good story.

I wanted my money back and I wanted my time back. I've seen some great John Carpenter movies, but In the Mouth of Madness was wasn't one of them.

I'm willing to suspend a fair amount of disbelief if I'm entertained. But a lousy story pushes me away to a distance where I just analyze it. Or go to sleep, or walk away.

Like I said earlier, I've seen some great John Carpenter movies. The Thing is one the all-time great horror movies. And it has a great plot. There are some things that viewers don't understand at first, like why are those guys shooting at the sled dog? But eventually we get enough answers that it all starts to make sense, and that internal logic means that each new plot development is going to mean something in context of the story. I was on the edge of my seat, wondering anxiously "What's going to happen next?"

The plot of In the Mouth of Madness didn't make much sense. So new plot developments were generally meaningless and didn't advance the story in any direction that mattered. It was just stuff happening on the screen. I was bored, so I analyzed it.

I watched Haute Tension (or Switchblade Romance as it is called in the UK) recently and loved it! I am a big lover of horror films but this was the first one I had seen in ages that really scared me. In fact there are a lot of pretty terrfying French films around that are worth a watch- Marytrs and Inside are two others I would certainly recommend.

Well they had this Event Horizon in the dvd shop today, but it's set in space and I'm not keen on films that are set in space so I didn't buy it...

But I will if it's really scary....so is it? lol

Can't say I've heard of that Switchblade Romance either.

To me a movie is either crap, or it was good.
