I dont have time to read ****ing war and peace. If people want to write their life stories, why not do it in a blog? On a forum you should keep your posts concise and punchy. Reading 5 pages of people disappearing up their own assholes isnt my idea of fun.

If you insist on trying to be funny, can you at least try and be funny? Thanks

You believe I was attempting to entertain you?

If you want funny, I suggest you find a mirror.

Oh and I would personally say that the reason a psychologist can't achieve quantifiable results has less to do with the field of psychology and more to do with how little we know about the brain.
Noone's calling you an idiot, Minx. Just to be clear on that. There are plenty of brilliant people (much smarter than I could ever hope to be) who believe in god, which I put in the same category as astrology (making money based on people's belief).

At the end of the day, if you want to believe something there is no amount of 'proof' that will change your mind. People still believe in things like homeopathy even though the controlled studies have been done and its been debunked. Now all they do is claim the studies were 'flawed' (they aren't) and that 'They' (the ubiquitous They) are blocking the research studies which 'prove' it works from being published in a reputable journal. LOL, on the connection to conspiracy thinking.

Mish and I (and others) had this argument some time ago about religion. Our point of agreement is that there seems to be some deep-seated need for [some] people to believe in something bigger than themselves. Its a cold, lonely universe out there if one removes the more easily imagined things like gods, an afterlife, and soulmates from the equation. There are other wonderous things to know, but they do require stretching ones thinking and that's not an easy thing for many people. Or, perhaps, given that even very intelligent people still believe in god, there may be some hard-wiring or early programming that cements this kind of thinking. Not a criticism, just how it is.

Seconded. I just call people morons on a whim - I only actually mean it if I'm referring to cheekxs. I know you're a very bright woman, even though I think you're wrong about the astrology stuff.

    Thanks guys.
Indi, you just got me thinking about a friend on FB (who passed away recently. Even though I never met her in real life, that still stings). She was awesomely cool. RIght into all types of music, always going to concerts - even organising them by the end. She was a great single mum and really enjoyed life. She was also heavily involved with her local church. She very much believed in the whole immaculate conception thing, which I just cannot get my head around. I believe in a higher power, I believe in the afterlife. I even believe that there was a dude named Jesus who was very enlightened for his time, and had everything he said taken out of context. (My sincere apologies to anyone I might be offending) I just can't believe the 'fairy tales'. We argued often about the nature of spirituality vs religion....

I've forgotten what the point of that was... Oh well I'll post it anyway and edit it if I remember later..

I know exactly what you mean - I'm in no way religious (I don't believe in God or the afterlife or anything) but I would describe myself as very spiritual. I believe in the human spirit, the incredible beauty mankind is capable of appreciating. The transcendence of music, art, literature - there's a reason, for example, why my avatar and username is TheCafeTerrace. I'd rather be remembered as someone who feels deeply and keenly, rather than someone who was pure reason and logic... This is what LSD does to you.

    Oh, hell. Let's go there.

I think people who describe themselves as spiritual rather than religious are too lazy to make serious study of esoteric religion. It's an artificial distinction that is merely a product of American culture.
Relax... I'll need some information first. Just the basic facts - can you show me where it hurts?

    Define 'spiritual'.

I don't believe in gods, spirits... still holding out for eetees, but none so far. If I had to give myself a label I'd go with secular humanist

Need to test beliefs – A conviction that dogmas, ideologies and traditions, whether religious, political or social, must be weighed and tested by each individual and not simply accepted by faith.
Reason, evidence, scientific method – A commitment to the use of critical reason, factual evidence and scientific method of inquiry in seeking solutions to human problems and answers to important human questions.
Fulfillment, growth, creativity – A primary concern with fulfillment, growth and creativity for both the individual and humankind in general.
Search for truth – A constant search for objective truth, with the understanding that new knowledge and experience constantly alter our imperfect perception of it.
This life – A concern for this life (as opposed to an afterlife) and a commitment to making it meaningful through better understanding of ourselves, our history, our intellectual and artistic achievements, and the outlooks of those who differ from us.
Ethics – A search for viable individual, social and political principles of ethical conduct, judging them on their ability to enhance human well-being and individual responsibility.
Justice and fairness – an interest in securing justice and fairness in society and in eliminating discrimination and intolerance.
Building a better world – A conviction that with reason, an open exchange of ideas, good will, and tolerance, progress can be made in building a better world for ourselves and our children.

Interesting. I must admit, I'm certain I could find myself another 'label' but personally I use the term because, as far as my research has so far told me, there is no ONE religion that has all the answers. Maybe I should call myself a religious magpie. I pick out the bits of a religion that 'ring true' and add them to my nest of beliefs.
