I think marriage is because they want the paper (the official document they are together for life) not because they want to have kids. I know a couple that has been married for 14 years. They have no kids, nor did they ever want any in the first place.

Sorry to hit a nerve RB; You don't HAVE to get married; hell, you don't have to DO anything.

I'm saying that is the only reason to; everything else about it is just redtape.

Sure, you could just live together and be happy, but I find it less convenient all around to have the child's last name the father's, and the mother having a different one. And as far as I know, the father's name is the one the child takes, as long as he's on the birth certificate.

No honey... actually most woman chose the child to have their last name. If your not married you have the option of which last name you would like to use. I see what your sayign about it being the only reason to get married but that isn't always the best case for every person.

There is no convienance factor at all... It's all the same except you have a document and a couple of rings. we do the same things as any married couple would with our child, there would be no difference if we were married at all excpet we would have rings on our finger.
