There is no convienance factor at all... It's all the same except you have a document and a couple of rings. we do the same things as any married couple would with our child, there would be no difference if we were married at all excpet we would have rings on our finger.

So if it's all the same, why not choose to just get married then, and everyone has the same last name-that'd be the only difference.

So here are some differences I can think of with marriage:

Legal recognition
You're allowed hospital visitation rights
In some states, if you die, money goes right to your married spouse
Your child is not considered a bastard by the state
Your child birth certificate have different rules applied to them

In some states, "common law" marriage will take care of any death benefit and hospital visitation rights. If not, a will can take care of financial, and living will issues.
