i have grown up with racism ...

but now, i think almost everyone i know has a prejudice to a certain race ... and sometimes, when someone of a certain race does something to offend me, i blame them all ... i know it's the wrong way, but it has become a conditioned response for me ...

I used to believe that not everyone was prejudiced, but I am not so confident anymore. People who you'd least expect to hear a bigoted comment from come out of the blue and say something dumb (usually in the form of a joke) and become defensive and hostile if called on it. It's never that they said something stupid, it is always that you can't take a joke, as if people should be expected to laugh at and participate in their own negative, offensive characterizations.

In any case, I think these situations tend to reinforce a person's preference for associating with others that are like themselves. Why should anyone want to put up with that?

There's an awful lot of loosely applied language in this thread which makes it impossible for me for make any meaningful contribution to it. Prejudice isn't the same as bigotry isn't the same as racism isn't the same negative isn't the same as offensive isn't the same characterization isn't the same as compatibility, but everyone seems to be using the words and concepts as if they are all the same thing. All in all, it sounds as if everyone's just expressing knee-jerk reactions instead of offering reasoned responses.

thats great to hear . were they friendly ( we can be pretty mean to peruvians sometimes) ?

I will say this: The very word "race" as it's being applied here is, itself, racist. There are no such things as separate human races. They don't exist.

i agree with this , race , its not like were THAT different , basically color and small things as eye shape and hair . culture is different than race but its always associated as the same thing , hence stereotypes and other general remarks .

Yeah they were real cool with me.. we joked around all the time.

And yea yea yea... the worse part is if we were talkin face to face I'd be even worse.. but here where I can read it slow, and have time to think of how to remember to say things.. makes me almost seem like I know what I'm talkin about (despite all the errors)

If I can I'm gonna take more classes... although it's kind of embarrassing to not even know your own language fluently.. but hey that's what happens when you grow up with all english speaking people ;[
