I just can't wrap my mind around how so many kids are confident at such an early age and then maintain it well into adulthood.

It comes from trying things and succeeding as well as failing which is all about lessons learned. The only thing to fear, is fear itself. We learn by getting past our comfort zone and pushing the fear aside. With practice comes the confidence we need to just do.
It's like the first day of school. Every new school year we have butterflies on the first day but within a week, after we know our schedule, where our locker is and who our home room teacher is... it's just routine.

Predictably enough, every single thing seems to have gone not according to plan..Skype girl was...not quite what she presented on her profile when she turned her webcam on. Here for the summer girl was a bitch. HS friend in retrospect almost assuredly friendzone'ed me.. Man. This is extremely hard.
