Yeah, I kinda realised majority of the board are very good with words. E.g. nomas, sombra, donut, Choi etc. I'm wondering, how have you people (don't know if this is the right word) become as articulate as you guys are now?

I don't think they are.
"Why are you an atheist?"
"because I paid attention in science class."
Good for you. You have an opinion.

Most likely read up words that they dont understand in the dictionary, which enables them to expand their vocabulary.
Everyone learns words they hear in different ways..whether it be hearing it or just looking it up.

I've been a writter all my life, I atone my knowledge by watching people throughout the years. This is how I study life.
By understanding human behavior, I can atone to figure out peoples reaction to a moment. A choice if you will...
We however simple those choices may be, are really a fascinating and complex species.

Ummm... I think you are using the word "atone" improperly...
"To make amends, as for a sin or fault: These crimes must be atoned for."

the dictionary is my best friend and my worst enemy.

...this is just my perspective on the situation...
depends how you look at it, when I use atone, I use it more so for it's middle english meaning more so then modern. Because your right it that sense. I don't use the word very often though...Originally Posted by shh!

lol thanks quiche! i don't know, age? education? reading a lot of books? i think a most people are pretty articulate on this board. with the exception of those people who type in some crazy 'shorthand type'.
Books help.
I've always enjoyed reading books.
Ironically I always hated vocabulary.
Almost always failed my vocab quizzes in highschool.
Thanks, Quiche, I'm honored to have made your list because I don't feel quite so articulate..I just try to choose the most appropiate words I can find to best convey what I'm trying to get accross. This may be because I only started learning english in like fourth grade...maybe it's overcompensation.
Still, as others have mentioned: observing others..and it depends what kind of atmosphere you're in...so like Sombra said, this is where experience comes in. As a teenager you probably don't hang out with a lot of people that speak the way some of us write here. I know I picked up a lot of buzz words once I began my professional career. And, of course, reading as Frisbee suggests..other than that..personal ambition. Some of us still think that being articulate is an impressive quality, but honestly most girls probably don't want to have to carry a dictionary on dates, so there's a time and place for everything, I guess is the message.
This might explain why I didn't have any real friends throughout junior high.Originally Posted by nomas

But besides those two you'll find that we all tend to type exactly how we talk.
Well...
Maybe not Jim.
But Jim's gay so he has an excuse.

Regardless we all talk good!
