Ever run a marathon for charity?

I have heard that various groups, American Cancer Society, Komen, etc. have marathons for charity and that you can get hooked up with a volunteer trainer who will help you with a fitness program.

Anyone ever done this, or know where I can get info?

    Thanks

I did it a couple of years ago, except it was for a big ocean swimming event. It's a great idea. You meet a lot of cool people and charity stuff always feels good.
Is it burnin'? Well, f-ck, now you're learnin'.

We have group running clinics here in Vancouver that will help you train. Ask at your local rec centre, they will have info.

    Breast cancer?

Wait, I've never heard of this, please, please make me aware.

In fact, maybe then I'll throw my money at a worthless cause and run in a feel-good marathon!

    Good for you!

This reminds me: the hospital I work in has the lowest recurrence rate for breast cancer in the country. That's pretty remarkable for a community hospital.

Anyway, good for you. It's not a worthless cause at all.

It's easily the most worthless cause.

Anyone who isn't aware of breast cancer is an idiot, especially considering the only places they'll host these feel-good-athons is where people are liberal about talking about breast cancer.

You might as well spread the word of God at the local church.

Secondly, where does all the money go?

Where has all that money gone?

How much closer are they to curing cancer?

    It's a JOKE.

Whoever is in that business was a genius because even during a recession idiots will throw their time and money into that hoax.

You will probably feel differently when someone you know personally gets breast or ovarian cancer, Frasbee.

The money is used for research for new medications and treatments, and since the rates of survival are rising, I think I'd consider these efforts successful.

As for me, I am glad for these kinds of fundraisers. I have a strong history of breast cancer in my family, and in fact am currently being screened for a "suspicious area". Should the worst happen, I think I am too young to throw in the towel.

yeah, seriously, "breast cancer awareness" - what a dud cause.

edit: oh shit, I just saw Vashti's post. I'm talking about raising awareness for breast cancer (as opposed to medical research etc). I think the awareness horse has been well and truly flogged.

    That's my point.

Breast cancer awareness in the western world is bullshit.

    How about a cure, hmm?

How about money towards specific research and developments?

I'd like to see where that money is allocated.

I'm curious as to how much money it cost to host one of those races. How much of it is overhead?

Honestly, I agree with Frasbee, where is this money really going?

I bet my life a huge percentage of the money earned or food saved for the supposed poor countries is not actually being sent to them.

Just like those churches that "require" an offering at the end of the service. Where the hell is the money going? The churches dont look any better, but for damn sure the preacher is dressed to a mother****ing t.

    It's bullshit.
