Telling a girl she's cute freaks her out?

Dear ppl,

I need some perspective and advice. I'm beginning to date this girl, and she's really shy. It's not easy engaging her via text, but we do talk quite a bit when we meet up. But since we don't meet up that often, I'm trying to maintain contact with her via text. There was once when she was a bit more responsive over text but when I started making comments like she's cute, she kind of backed off and didn't reply as much. Need help to explain her behavior. Did I freak her out with my comment?

cute means to some people like "aw that little girl is adorable". I remember my bf called my hun a few times at the beginning and it bothered me coz that is what i call my friends. It confused me and made me wonder does he really like me??

Just call her babe or beautiful..
