    silent hill

I just rented the movie and watched it by myself. I gotta say, it was a really great movie. There was a lot of freaky parts in it and it had a sad ending.

It was a lot like the game, and some parts were so intense and terrifying that I almost couldn't watch! I had trouble playing the game back in the day when it came out. It was a really scary game.

If you like scary movies, this is a must-see.

I liked it also but I felt the final bloodbath was just gratuitous and killed the sort of psychological-horror nature of the rest of the movie

Yea, I didn't like the final bloodbath either. Was that even in the game? I never got that far.

That was definitely not in the game, though the ultimate ending was pretty faithful to the mythos.

Yeah, more Pyramid Head woulda been sweet.

Cool trivia: The movie was originally supposed to have an all female cast (woulda been cool)

Unless you count the guy that played some of the monster parts and all the old men in that witch-burning cult... and the husband and the cops. I don't think it would be cool to have a single-gender cast.

Yea, my favorite monster from silent hill is definitely pyramid head. I often draw figures with similar features, such as the big sword. Do you think that was a rip-off of Cloud from Final Fantasy VII?

I really wonder why people watch movies that scare the shit out of them. Why *choose* to pay to sit down for two hours and watch horrible things happen? That, to me, is more perverted and sick than people who want to watch others make love. At least that's a beautiful thing that humans do- killing and terrorising our own species is a horrible ugly thing that we do, and yet it is more accepted? gah. [/rant]

What the **** was that shit?

I don't want this shit in my thread. This thread is designed to talk about how cool the Silent Hill movie was. And as an FYI the grotesque and disturbing scenes are used to portray a moral behind a story.

    Make your own thread.

I used to feel the same way, and still do in some respects (I'm against gore-porn)

But pschological horror movies (with or without gore) are important in that the same way that dramas are. To say that it's bad to be afraid would be like saying it's bad to be sad. If that were the case then movies like Schindlers List would be inapropriate.

I think it's good to get in touch with our emotional and psychological extremes from time to time

I liked the movie and all, but what moral? Never crash your car in a paralell universe?

I had a friend who had an interesting theory about this. She felt that humans who ate meat but didn't kill it for themselves experienced a disconnect from nature, which got all twisted up and resulted in a fascination with gore.

There are several morals to the story. Don't be sarcastic. Think about that.

ooo, lilwing's huffy. Anyway, you didn't 'design' the thread that way. The topic is Silent Hill, which is a horror film. It seems entirely on topic to give my opinion on the genre.
also, don't you think the thread is a lot more interesting with this type of comment, rather than a few people chiming in and saying "yeah hey that's a cool movie"?

I'd love to know what moral *needs* all that horror to be come across properly. no really, I do. I watched Dead Mans Shoes, which had quite a lot of messed up stuff in it, but it felt like it was deserved somehow- You'd find yourself rooting for the guy who was doing the killing. To involve the audience like that, to make them question and examine their own ethics and draw their own lines, etc, that I find interesting- just plain horror for the sake of being scared.. that's what I don't get.

hm, yeah, good point. there are tearjerker movies after all. I don't quite see how Schindlers List comes into it... it was based on a guy who gave most of his wealth and his standing to save 1,100 jews during the holocaust- seems to me that focuses on human kindness, how is that a horror movie?

heh, you know what's funny? I grew up on a farm where my parents regularly slaughtered and served our animals for dinner. I'm talking when I was a kid, I'd watch a lamb be born, feed it, play with it, then eat it and wear clothes that my mom knit out of sheep's wool. I didn't actually kill/slaughter them myself, obviously.. but still, maybe i'm just not twisted ^.^

I did. in fact, the scariness of it was a prominent theme, so I think I was well within the limits of on-topicness to comment on that. Your comment of almost not being able to watch made me wonder why you'd want to make yourself watch in the first place, and that seemed dumb to me so I posted my opinion. I'm sorry if that offends you.

a know a kid who used to watch horror movies; LOVED them. Also suffered from 'unexplained' traumatic nightmares/terrors (there's a difference... not sure) and needed counselling... hm.

I'm inclined to agree with you to some extent. It kind of reminds me of boxing as a sport. WTF is *wrong* with people? We really haven't evolved one iota from the gladiator days.
Relax... I'll need some information first. Just the basic facts - can you show me where it hurts?
