looking for moving, non-cheesy, love songs.

I recently noticed that a lot of the songs I listen to are quite moving sad songs, such as Jeff Buckley's "Last Goodbye" (possibly the saddest song in the known universe), Dire Straits "Romeo and Juliet", Tracy Chapman's "The Promise", which isn't actually that sad lyrically but still has a sad aura to it... etc...

Of course I do have happy songs, but they're just.. happy shiny pop-ish songs, they don't feel sincere.

anyway..what do you think? Do you know any good, non-cheesy love songs that aren't tear-jerkers.. or at least, are so in a good way? this means no Elton John or Celine Dion stuff (except for exceptional cases).

One such moving love song that I do know of is Flames by VAST. At the moment I'd have to say it's one of the best love songs out there. To quote one of the comments on songmeanings.net:

"This is one of the most sincere tributes to love. Not the everyday love song that calls anything love. This song talks about something that I think is worthy or truly being called love. The music is wonderful."

I force my wife to stop whatever she's doing and dance around the kitchen (or living room, or resaurant foyer, etc) whenever [URL="http://www.ladyjayes.com/unchainedmelody.html"]Unchained Melody[/URL] is played. One time it even happened, beside the road with the world watching, when we were stuck in a traffic jam. It used to embarass the kids something fierce - we'd hear things like "Stay away - they're doing mushy hug dancing."

I've liked [URL="http://www.moodyblues.co.uk/index_main.html"]The Moody Blues'[/URL] material ([URL="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moody_Blues"]And Here[/URL]) for a LONG time. A lot of it speaks of people searching to re-establish a lost relationship. The '60's and 70's albums, like "Days of Future Passed" and "Threshold of a Dream", really need to be heard as a single, extended work rather than a collection of cuts. [URL="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qBqnln7jq8"]"Nights in White Satin"[/URL] is one of my favorites of all time, when they play it with Graeme Edge's "Poem" that immediately follows on the original album - but commercial radio being what it is, they almost never do. [URL="http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/The-Story-In-Your-Eyes-lyrics-Moody-Blues/BCBDE9B7A972B5C648256A6A00220CFD"]"Story In Your Eyes"[/URL] is another good cut.

Among more recent performances I like the sexy, vibrato-rich voice of [URL="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jane_Olivor"]"Miss Jane O"[/URL] ([URL="http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/janeolivor/"]Jane Olivor[/URL]) - especially the [URL="http://www.mp3.com/albums/451410/summary.html"]Love Decides[/URL] CD, including "[URL="http://sg1.allmusic.com/cg/smp.dll?link=ojtl6355x20i3psb8uw5c4t&z=MP3&r=20.as x"]However Dark The Night[/URL]".

Although [URL="http://www.fernandoortega.com/"]Fernando Ortega[/URL] is a Christian (religious) performer, compositions like [URL="http://www.lyricsdownload.com/ortega-fernando-angel-fire-lyrics.html"]Angel Fire [/URL] and Margee Ann are actually personal love songs.

As you grow older you may find some music is meaningful to you because of its association to events, rather than its lyric content. I won't try to explain why I sing a certain piece to my wife whenever we attend the church where we were married - it's a long ways from what people would call a "love song". But Rachmaninov's "[URL="http://www.content.loudeye.com/scripts/hurl.exe?clipid=011782501010006900&cid=600111"]Variations on Paginini's Theme[/URL]" makes us look at each other, because it's the theme from the romantic movie "[URL="http://www.somewhereintime.tv/"]Somewhere in Time[/URL]". We're familiar with the location where it was filmed, and have snapshots of us re-enacting, on the original location, the scene where Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour first met.

Like I said, "Nights in White Satin" takes on more significance when you hear it flow into the poem that follows. Then you go back, listen to the entire "Days of Future Passed" at one sitting and you've got a good start on an essay fro Freshman Composition - or maybe even a term paper.
