Dating is like a dance -- a matter of synchronizing your rhythms (but not backing someone into a corner). Sometimes you can't tell if a person is totally uninterested or just shy or reserved. Make your approach using what I call the "Flirting Flamenco." It has three steps:

  1. The Approach. Make your boldest move to gain the other person's attention. This should last a few minutes.
  2. The Retreat. Back off (sip your soda, dig in your pocketbook) to take the focus off the flirtation and to give the person a chance to assess you.
  3. The Re-approach. Test the waters. If your target responds, fine. but if not, definitely move on after three tries.
