birthday gift/celebration for boy?

It's his birthday today and he's coming over to my apt tonight. He's not so much a boyfriend but definitely more than just a friend. Basically, the question is, I'm not sure how he would prefer to celebrate.

I already have his gift (CD and some toys: pez candy and water guns) but I'm trying to decide what to do in terms of cake/food. We probably won't be having dinner together (we're busy students and usually grab a bite on the go somewhere), but I'd like to get him a cake or something. Maybe some cupcakes? Maybe I should plan a dinner just in case?
