Unions are for people in specialized fields. It protects those people. When I get through all of my schooling, I'll be joining a CRNA union. When I worked in construction as a sprinkler fitter (the sprinkler systems in buildings in case of fire), I was going to be in a union. I'm actually a bit surprised that an electrician wouldn't want to join a union.

You have to pay dues, regardless whether you're working or not.

If you don't have work, you sit in the hall and wait for it.

They're also extremely political, and members have been hazed into voting democratic, just because.

Also, as an apprentice, I can't get a raise, except for every 12 months, a non-union shop I can make more money faster if I work hard. Also, I would be obligated to go to school, and union shops don't want to pay for someone's school if that person is just going to up and leave for a different city.

Also, the amount of people that get away with doing nothing, and still get paid for it? Ridiculous.

Unions don't need anymore power than they already have, unless we want the productivity in this country to lessen even more.

There needs to be a balance, unions need to fight long and hard for what they get, we don't need anymore socialism.

All I know is certain fields need unions. The one that I'm in is highly specialized and we're righting to keep the power we have and try to get a little more. We're having to compete with MDs. I'd rather have a union fighting for me than against me.

Back in the day my grandfather used to go to bars in towns where people thought like you, Fras. He went there expressly to get into fistfights and beat the ever-loving shit out of union critics.

Of course unions were hugely necessary back then, too.

I like to know that too.

Just because he attended a Muslim school for a few years doesn't make him a Musilim. My best friend's friends attended Catholic school and none of them are Catholic.

He didn't have a choice on what school to attend as a child. He was never a Muslim though.

What are you watching? I noticed him talking about his mother and maternal side of his family often. He knows his mother's side more than his father's.

If you mean his skin color...well this is North America.

It's his family and he can talk about whomever he wishes.

i'm just saying rephrase: yes he talks about both sides but majority of what he talks about when it comes to his family is his black background....it just seems like thats the side he wants to promote more....thats all i'm saying....it was an observation

Perhaps things are different in other areas, but where I live, the networks aren't focusing on race (black OR white) all that much. I expected more... maybe it is worse in the South, or in other areas where the population may find it relevant.

Also, if Obama is talking about his black relatives, I'd say it is probably more of a defensive move, rather than "promoting" them. I think he would like to downplay the importance of race while not minimizing the significance of a black man being a viable candidate for the first time in this country's history.

Obama was raised by his mother and so he talks about her more than anyone else.

well it must be the media then...its true here in Ireland we wouldn't necessarily be interested in the full coverage....we get snippets here and there....if one was interested they would watch cnn or all the other satellite news channels we have.
