    Pain...

Like most everyone else here, I dated a girl for nearly a year before we recently broke up a couple of weeks ago. I thought i was fine until she told me she was dating someone new. This completely crushed me out of nowhere. I thought I was over everything, but I obviously wasn't. This hurts so much, and despite me not wanting to sound like a whiney baby, it just hurts. I don't really have any questions, I guess, I just wanted to let it out a little bit. I don't really feel like sleeping, eating, doing much of anything, it really hurts.

In cases like this, though, you really need to be doing stuff

I agree with Missleepy. The best way to get through this is to make sure you're taking care of your basic needs and keeping yourself busy. Depriving yourself of sleep and food is only going to cause more emotional distress (when your body becomes rundown it does affect the mind). I know it hurts, and it will for a while. But you can't let your whole life stop.

Yes, taking care of yoru basic needs is priority. When you do feel like grieving after your basic needs are satisfied then grieve.

The first week after my breakup, I know how hard it is. I couldn't do anything without feeling like I'm suffocating. I had to force myself to eat. It will hurt, but you have to take care of yourself.

I hear you guys. But, it is the sleep that hurts the most. I know, that, when I think about it, things will get better, but it just hurts right now. Also, i goto bed at night and just sit there thinking, which inevitably leads to thinking about things that don't allow me to sleep. Then, I wake up early, and grogy b/c i couldn't sleep at night. It's a viscious cycle. Oh well, 'tis better to have loved and lost....i guess.

The pain will go away with time. For some reason you weren't right for each other and thus this chapter of your lives has closed. You are just adjusting to this change. Once change is complete the pain will go and you will be ready for a much better relationship than the one you had.

You can always take the joy and happiness in thought that someone is taking your left overs. I do all the time.

    It shouldn't take that long

It shouldn't take that long to get over a person to pick up the pieces and move on. Something's not right if it's taking you 5+ years (and counting) to do that. Have you ever asked yourself why?

I think they're asking how long it will take to get over a 5 year relationship. Not why it's taking 5 years to get over a relationship.
