    Frasbee vs Doesntmatter

DM decided to rain on my happy parade in my Philly thread by trying to claim that Philadelphia is not considered the North. More than once actually in an obvious attempt to hijack my thread with his prodding words.

So after I deleted his posts and my responses to them I decided I'd leave it up to you all to decide if one could refer to Philadelphia, and Pennsylvania as the "North". I want no mention of this argument to touch upon my Philadelphia thread again. Yes, or else.

I feel as though Philadelphia and it's surrounding regions have developed enough of a reputation throughout history to warrant their referral as being part of the "North". And those being from those areas as "yankees".

From a southerner's point of view, Philly would count as the North.

Philadelphia was part of the Union North during the American Civil War.

Any person I've ever come across has always understood I was from the North when I mentioned I was from Philly, even as far as saying "Oh you're from up North." Not "Oh you're from the East." Or "Northeast." Or "East Coast." Hell even East Coast has been use reference to my state despite the fact it's landlocked by New Jersey.

DM never tried to explain what defined a Northern state if he even had one at all at the time of his statements. If he would like to put in his logic, by all means, he may do it here, but once again, not in my vacation thread.

I'm not even sure if that statement is true anymore because they've moved the statue...wasn't there that last time I checked.

Either way, Rocky is a Northerner.

    Because he's from Philly.

So... what does it matter? I mean, is there any significance beyond the geography or is DM trying to imply you're a slack-jawed yokel?

I haven't seen the other thread yet but isn't DM from NY or that area? Maybe he is stating that Philly is located south of where he is located. If he was traveling to PA, he would travel south.

I voted South just because, well...it's probably boring over there. California ftw.

    And DM is my brotha.

Californians would likely consider you to be "east coast". The north is usually used to refer to states like North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin.

I am sure people in the South consider you a Northerner because compared to them, you are.

You're both geographically incorrect. Philly is part of the Northeast. If you get technical, though, location is only relative. So I could say your from the south... if I were from Canada. Now does it really ****ing matter, though? No, no it doesn't.

I think of the north-south divide as less of a geographical divide and more of a cultural divide.

Eh, they are about the same in both contexts; completely ambiguous. America seems so diverse you can't really say one side of the fence is necessarily greener than the other.

there's a cultural divide between the north and south but there's a major one with the east and west.

west end girls are hotter. that is all. except for starbuck who is an obvious exception.

    Of course it matters.

He's trying to regionally castrate me.

    But I won't have it.

EDIT: I'm not sure if they went Bush or Gore. Pittsburgh and Philly are both very democratic, but the middle is frequently republican. We're one of the states that's always up to question when it comes to election time. Our governor is democratic, and all of Philly's mayors have been democratic for a long time.

From looking at the map, I'd say it looks pretty north to me. Maybe more northeast, but definitely not south.

Although you're south to me, 'cause I'm in Canada.
