We're just West of the coastal range (where Whistler is), on the water. The rockies are farther East.

Its not like Seattle, which is more inland & not on the ocean directly.

B/c Vancouver is right on the coast, we get dumped on more. Rain if its warm (mostly), snow if it falls in a cold snap. What we get depends on the weather system coming in from the ocean & its direction. Air moving up the mtns quickly will also fall as snow as the air is quickly cooled in winter.

But, b/c we are in a mountainous area, there are loads of microclimates. Way more here than any other mtn area I've been in, including Hawaii (but that's tropical), and the Andes. A couple kilometres & being in the rain shadow of a local mtn can make the difference b/t a relatively dry home or a sopping wet (and mossy) one. Add a bit of altitude & one gets snow instead in winter. Ppl consult local rain shadow maps here when purchasing a house (and looking for telltale moss on the roofs).

    Come visit someday, Miso.

For the record, California gets plenty of snow, depending on your location. Blue Canyon gets 240" a year, and I am planning a ski trip to Mammoth for winter break. In fact, there is lots of skiing in California, so obviously it snows.

I've lived in Vancouver for pretty much my entire life, so if anyone wants verification on the weather in Vancouver, I'd be the reigning authority here. We are lucky if it snows two or three times. Even so, it melts in 24 hours......or the rain just turns into a slush pile. Really gross to walk in.

I lived in Calgary for one year. Then I found out what snow was. I'm going to Saskatchewan for Christmas....so I'm REALLY going to see snow like I've never seen snow before. My fiance is from there, and he thinks it's great......it drives him wild that all it does out here all winter is rain. He says that at least snow is kind of cheery.

We had much more snow than this last year. In fact, it was where I live for all of Jan & most of Feb. After the 4th storm & almost not making it up a local mtn, we got snow tires for our car.

I wish it would snow occassionally where I live. But no, we are all walking around in shorts and T shirts and going to the beach while everyone else shovels snow.

Getting snow in a mountain range where nobody lives in snow across an entire metropolitan area are 2 very, very different things

Oswego NY, where my sister went to college her first year, averages over 200 inches of snow per year and sometimes gets over 300 inches of snow in a year. However, people actually live there. It's a town on flat ground getting that much, not just a ski resort above treeline where it doesn't affect anyone

Freak year. I hope it's not a sign of things to come. I've always liked the fact that we're so mildly temperate.

Well, I'm away for this winter, so I don't much care. But I sure hope that last year was a freak year b/c we moved out west to get away from the ugly winters.
