Ofcourse there are cases of abuse, in those situations children are better off when there is a separation. But majority of separations occur for reasons other than abuse and in majority of those cases children suffer as a result, many suffer a lot more than they would if both parents stayed together.

It depends on which jurisdiction you are in. In some places there is a legal requirement for formal separation period before divorce can be finalised (6 months to a year). In some places there is a counseling requirement. You have to attend a court. You have to split property (another legal proceeding).

It's not as simple as just "See ya, we broke up".
