Health Diet Exercise - random tips thread :)

Thought I'd create a thread where people can just post random bits of tips relating to pursuit of better health through diet and exercise. Guess I'll start off...

Eat 5 time per day, small portions.

Exercise AT LEAST 3 times per week for 20 minutes (that's minimum) Work your way up to 6 times per week

    Set Goals

exercising 20 minutes a day can equal the total time that it takes you to from your car to your job site and back...

you need to do more than that son.

i should have phrased the statement better. 20 minutes of high intensity workouts. walking to your car and back does not count! lol

I don't buy that. Health is not a competition with other people. Health is about yourself, and achieving the best you can. Set goals from within, don't look without. A wise man once said that

that really wouldn't surprise me! 'high intensity for short time' is always better than 'low intensity for longer time'

i'm definitely going to need neo to back me up on this one, but i believe that's how it goes

Well, I'm no expert, but that statement sounds conditional.

For example: I might sprint flat-out for 30 seconds, burn a lot of calories but then that's it.

Or, I might go for a 30 minute run/jog. Not burn as many calories in a given 30-second interval, but the TOTAL amount of calories used will be much higher.

I suppose, ideally if the goal is to expend calories then one wants to exercise as hard as one can while still maintaining activity. So, physiologically, you'd want to stay as close to exercising at that aerobic/anaerobic threshold as one can tolerate.

I know my aerobics class tormentors--I mean teachers--used to do a lot of classes with intervals. Those always kicked my ass into next week. I should go back, come to think. They were kind of fun.

I hope Neo will post on this. I'd like to learn what the current thinking is about all this exercise stuff.
Second thoughts can generally be amended with judicious action; injudicious actions can seldom be recovered with second thoughts.

high-intensity interval training, or HIIT, has actually been shown to be more efficient at burning calories than any other form of exercise. To sum up the philosophy behind HIIT: you're basically going all out for short bursts and then tricking your body into thinking it's still going while you take quick, intermittent breaks to catch your breath.

Cardio will burn muscle. If you need it for your job or a specific sport fine, otherwise train hard in the gym and worry more about your diet.

    not anymore

When i was training i was running just over 6 miles, two days a week, and two 8 mile runs a week, with either a comp or a 15 mile run once a week, and one day at the gym working on my strength. the other day was rest
Obviously this varied if i was aproaching a race.

I also swam on the days i did the 6 mile runs.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.
