This made me think...

I read this story today and it made me think

Father Saves Son by Donating Part of His Liver
http://www.ucsfchildrenshospital.org/patients/bergholzTim.html

What if this operation had a high chance of being fatal for the father? What if by saving his son he would have to sacrifice his own life? What would you do if faced with such a decision?

I'm interested in people's opinions on this.

If/when I decide to have children it would be the most important decision of my life. So I'd protect them even if it means I have to die. I've always said in the past that not everyone should have kids. Some people are just very bad at it that's all.

This is an instance where the infinite goodness in mankind shines through. A person is willing to give his life for the one he/she loves.
I don't want kids, but I can imagine that a parent would do this without even a nanosecond of doubt. Unfortunatly this does not happen very often, which makes it all the more amazing.
Can someone please explain what is so great about constantly being reminded of that which you cannot have?

There is definitely a risk..before you go into the operation room, the doctor will give you some sort of agreement or text that tell you about what you can expect...and you have to agree..(i think so) ..

As for father donate liver for his son, he is doing it willingly for his love. I believe he won't mind losing his life and glad he save his son ..

At the end of the day, love is very powerful..

hmm...
In a two parent family this is a no brainer. However I'm the only parent my son has, risking my life to save him might leave him alive but orphaned. I honestly don't know how I would handle that situation.

Of course I would give my life for my child, but where would that leave him? Would it be the right choice?

They is family of mine, who I'm sure would do everything they could. However my son is autistic, which means I am often his translator. While we're working through various therapies to insure his future independence it's hard to imagine how he would get by day to day without me.

<sigh> real life is always so much more complicated than hypotheticals.

I don't want to be the bad-news guy but I just inform You that someday You won't be there to help him.No matter how much he's dependant on You, if I were You I would do anything to teach him as soon as possible how to be more independent. I know it's easier said than done, but imagine tfu tfu someday something happens ,and then what? You have to prepare him because You don't know the day or the hour.

Trust me I know all too well that I won't always be there. Hell the goal of any decent parent is to make oneself obsolete, that goal is just a little tougher with a special needs kid.
Ironic as it sounds, I've devoted my life to this kid's independence. I work the job I do, not because it's my field or I like it, but because it gives me the freedom to take him to multiple therapies each week and to homeschool him (which is needed at this point due to social issues.)
