I have never understood this tendency. If you're no longer fitting in your clothes, you are gaining weight. If it takes more effort to get off the couch, you're gaining weight. If all of a sudden your tummy settles on the bed next to you when you lie on your side, you are gaining weight.

How on earth is it possible to deny all that?

Ya start cooking the meals so you have control over what she eats....maybe go grocery shopping together and suggest healthier foods....go for a walk after dinner, go to bed early so there is no late night snacking. Eating at night is the killer because that is when you are less active.
