    Advice from computer nerds required

Apologies for anyone who dislikes the term nerd. I use it as a compliment and a term of respect for those who can understand that which I cannot.

Ok, so hubby did something rather stupid and gave his debit card details to an untrustworthy source. We have sorted out the bank and he has filed a report with the cops.

I am now wondering what the chances are of needing to wipe the lap top? Would it be likely that some sort of nastiness is now residing in our computer?

We have been considering purchasing windows 7 (we still use XP) so it wouldn't be too much of a hassle in the long run, I guess I'm just wondering if I should be doing that ASAP, or if I can still wait a bit.

You should be alright if it was just that. Now if he went to an iffy website with super sparkly pop-ups flashing all over the place and he entered in his debit card info there, then you might want to give your computer a good scanning.

I personally recommend using MalwareBytes Anti-Malware. It is free...just do a google search for it. Download it, install it, update it, run a full scan and if it comes back clean, you should be gold. If not, let the program clean it up, and let me know what it found in case it's something that typically lingers. I don't know all the viruses out there, but I'm familiar with many of the nasty ones.

Get a new debit card for sure though! (I imagine you've done that already). The debit card info was probably the ultimate goal of the person at the other end...not infecting your computer.

    Excellent! Scanning now.

We're generally smart enough to avoid the bright and flashy adds. He basically had a moment where his horniness over-rode his logic centre. When I asked why he didn't just come to bed and wake me he told me our son had already wandered into our bed.

He now thinks he is the luckiest man in the world because when he told me, I cracked up laughing. I still think it's hilarious. The bit I don't find funny is the fact that he spent $70 for the privilege of having this happen. *sigh*

If he wants to avoid nasty downloads on the laptop and wants no browser history I recommend he use private browser......its in the tools.

I think he does that already. I'm not completely certain though because we have separate profiles and I can't access his history. I also just discovered that I need to get him to run the scans in his profile... but so far so good. Nothing to report on this end.

Luckily, the scammers only managed a whole $6 worth of fraudulent spends. They tried for $3000 but we had no where near that amount in the bank.

$6? Ouch. Hope he doesn't tell his scammer friends about that one.

LOL!! Yeah I think the scammer will be keeping that one to themselves.

Malwarebytes recently finished scanning. There were 10 problem files all linked to something called 'relevant knowledge'. They were all removed without a hiccup according to the log.

Still a little peeved that hubby was willing to spend $70 to relieve some horniness. :/ Oh well, he's learnt his lesson.

In all seriousness, he should stick to the mainstream, free sites. Show him the two main ones (I can detail after work) and he'll be fine. They're better than the pay sites anyway.

Doesn't need to wipe everything, because Malwarebytes is going to catch the keylogger software, which is what you're really concerned about here.
