Probably the most "component" that creates intimacy in a long term relationship is "voice". It's not images, it's not text, it's voice.
You need to bring up your life as it is with good and bad.
You need to be completely honest and let it all out.
Just don't play games.

It depends on how far apart you are. A few hours apart can still have intimacy and closeness if you make sure to meet together every weekend. If it's more than it's always a struggle and not worth the time in many cases.
You also need to contact each other every few days.

Talk on the phone or Skype. Voice really does make a difference. Or are you talking about phone sex?
