Why go to prom?

This question is for anybody, but I'm really directing this to people who plan to go to prom this year. I want to hear the arguments for people going to prom. If you're going, why are you going? Is there a certain motivation?

I have already asked this to many people. The general response is one of the following:

-Having a gf/bf/significant other that would make the night special.
-Liked someone for a long time or have some crush that you have been wanting to ask out.
-It's part of the high school experience.
-To go with your friends!

I agree with the first two reasons, but someone please tell me why else someone would go to prom... or argue the other two points. I'd like to hear your responses. Thanks!

I just like to go cause it's almost like a romantic date and you get to show of the art of dance. Most girls love a guy who dances well and if all goes along well, it porves you are a great gentleman.

Proves you are a great gentleman? I guess that depends on how you define a 'gentleman'... please elaborate a bit more on how this proves being a great gentleman.

Because you can show off a great deal of kindness, such as holding her hand, helping her out of the car, showing her your inner beauty by dance, showing that you care for her, staring into her eyes, getting into beautiful conversations by dancing, want me to go on? I love prom, I can charm up a girl so much she will fall in love with me, which I plan on doing with this one girl...

we have a prom at our school, and a prom queen. pretty dresses, tux's, limo's the whole turnip!

Well, movies glamourize it all. It's all in good fun that's all. I only really went to get in a skank pit and hang out with my friends.

we there don´t have proms... maybe we have lots of parties but we don´t go on big cars, and we don´t choose anyone the "best"

yep, it's a whole royalty/popularity contest. you have the prom queen and king, it's absolutely silly if you ask me.

the only reason i'd go to prom is if i was dating somebody ten years younger than me.

I guess it depends on the school and all, at my school nobody really cared about who was king and queen. Hell I didn't even pay attention to it. Then again I came from a large school, I guess there's more attention focused in smaller schools cause people know eachother better.

EDIT: No, not everybody goes with a date, some people just group with their friends, it is kind of like a goodbye party as you said, it's just somethin' everybody will remember years from now.

i´ve seen so many films about proms.. and they look so important..

Exactly, like I said, Hollywood makes them seem like such a big deal, and they're really not, at least not to everybody, it's more individual, some people (mostly girls) do look forward to it simply to get all dressed up.
