What does handsome mean?

So I'm just wondering what it means if a girl calls you handsome. This has happened quite a few times but I just want to know exactly what it means. These were older women who said this maybe around 24-30 years of age. I'm 21 pretty sure girls are attracted to me but they dont really say anything to me they just usually just make eye contact. Some come talk and hit on me but it seems most of them want me to make the first move. btw im like 5'11 160lbs and have really thick dreadlocks.
