    "I have a boyfriend."

When you guys normally encounter a girl you like, and they end up telling you they have a boyfriend, do you guys usually back off immediately or do you still remain persistent and stick around waiting until she becomes available? Would you remain friends with her. or cut your losses immediately? What is the smartest choice to make in a situation like this? Because I know how ridiculously common these type of situations are and I just want to learn how to be more self-aware next time. I don't want to make myself look desperate, or stupid. I just want to learn how to be more assertive about it..

Sometimes "I have a boyfriend," means "I'm single but I'm not interested in you." Sometimes it just means that she really does have a boyfriend. Either way, I take it as a sign of no interest and cut my losses immediately. That's the only smart choice, because it avoids drama, hassle, and general stupidity, in favor of moving on to the next possibility right away.

Also, even if she is interested (and sometimes they are), it just means she's cheating on him... and if she's cheating on him, she'll cheat on you.

Not necessarily. It does say a lot of things about her honesty and values though.

It means 'stick around and give me lots of attention if you want (wash my car, fix my broken stuff, listen to me whinge about my BF) , but no sex for you!'

Pretty straightforward, yes? Any other questions?

Personally the very fact that a guy would be willing to cheat on his partner would put me off from ever having anything to do with him, romantically. It's not about whether he'd cheat on me (which isn't always the case), it's about the type of person he is - weak and dishonest.

I say, "That's too bad. I could have been your manfriend." And then I walk away.

Wait so, if I like somebody and they have a boyfriend, I should just walk away and stop being friends with her? I'm confused..

Don't be a meddler. Let her know that you like her, and if her circumstances change to hit you up. Enough said.

    Haha, good one :-)!

I agree with haxan's "if things change, let me know" phrase. After that, walk away and leave her in peace. The ball's in her court now. A friend of mine got told that by a guy once. She stayed with her bf for some months after that, and then she broke up and went back to that guy! They had a 7 years long relationship. So, if the girl likes you, it works. If she doesn't, she won't date you even if she's single.

Girls who quote that are boring anyways and require high maintenance. So yeah, I consider it as a turn off more than a "not interested" sign.
To be or not to be?

    Is that the question?
