Does paying mean anything to a guy?

Quick question - does paying for drinks mean anything if you're just two friends meeting for drinks after work?

If you are long-time friends, then it probably means he's just picking up the tab.

If he's wealthy, then it means he's just picking up the tab.

If you don't know each other very well, he's definitely interested.

Not really, just being chivalrous perhaps?
...as ancient astronaut theorists would suggest

Between friends, it is not unusual that you buy drinks in turns. Do you always let him pay for your drinks even if you are friends?

He could be just being chivalrous but if he's a good friend of mine, I always make sure I take in turns. Oh it's the same with female friends.

It's usually pretty obvious if a guy is actually a friend or is interest in you more than as a friend even without free drinks!

We're going to need more context than this. How did this meeting come about?

He very well may have thought it was a date, but it's hard to tell from that question.

We are friends, but not very close. We've known each other for about 4 years but this was the first time we'd seen each other in over a year and we were meeting to catch up.

I wouldn't read too much into it. Somebody has to pay. Usually the one who extended the invitation pays, unless it was specifically mentioned otherwise. Sometimes if income disparity is large, the one with more money will always pay because it is easier for them to afford it. If it is a friends situation, it is not unusual to split the bill or alternate turns if it happens again.

I don't do it all the time. If its just me and a girl alone, then I'm paying because something has to happen out of it. If it's just friends or coworkers, it's means thanks for something that you did right, at times.
To be or not to be?

    Is that the question?
