Sounds like he makes the jokes to put his feelings out there in a safe way. It sounds like you probably don't reciprocate, so he's afraid to openly say how he feels.

Now I'm not native in english but very well educated in the english language and my interpitation is that he said it like that you wer ware what he wanted to know in explicit the surprise I don't think he got the part of you hinted sometimes being dominant. But it depends on if you are often aware of such aproaches, but to me there is nothing here really, just seems like normal talk,. I do know I can get annoyed when people don't get things, but this is also why Sarcasm, hidden messages etc. should NOT be in texting, if you want to use it instead of calling the person then you have to speak out and be clear.
