Do you want unlimited "thanks" back?

Right now, we can only thank a limited amount of posts per day, and we cannot thank posts that have been published more than 24 hours before.

Do you want to be able to thank whichever post you want, whenever you want?

Personally I use it as any of those, depending. For example, if I open a thread asking for help, and someone offers advice, I click "thanks" meaning "thank you for the advice". But I also use it to "like" (as in facebook like or +1 or thumbs-up etc) posts that I think are good, or funny, or that I agree with. It's a very useful feature IMO, it helps to show the OP that you agree with something that someone else said, without having to post the same exact thing.
