Do you have it set so it actually keeps a copy in your sent box? It's not enabled by default.

Do you have to tick a box each time for it to save? or can you set it up to save automatically each time?

It's in your general settings in your profile. Look for the setting "Save a copy of sent messages in my Sent Items folder by default".
