    Thanks for your responses.

But every woman knows that, regardless of all her other achievements, she is a failure if she is not beautiful

there are instances where I think "what's the use with being academic".

But then I hear guys going "there's not point if a girl is confident if they're not hot."

Or even worse: "I am offended if an ugly, but confident girl, came up to me. As if she thought I had a chance with her!"

    You're confusing respect with fame.

    Oh really?

Guys actually just gush over hot girls (literally may I add) in such a way where you can define it to be "respect".

Attractiveness is relative. I could find a man drop dead gorgeous, and you could find him repulsive. Different people are attracted to different things.

Keep in mind that society also respects Brad Pitt and David Beckham more than Richard Feynman or Steven Pinker.

ummmm....why would one respect a movie star? Would like to see your evidence that "society respects Brad Pitt"

David Beckham on the other hand makes a good role model in terms of his leadership and sportsmanship, so yeah - I can see why he's respected.

Not sure why I should necessarily respect an academic.
Never regret anything that has happened in your life. It cannot be changed, forgotten or undone. So, take it as a lesson learned and move on.

I know, it's quite sad. The world could happily do without Beckham, but Feynman has influenced the world in so many ways.
